a square dedicated to Tito Neri
Tito Neri, personality of the harbour and shipowning world of the town of Livorno, since yesterday morning has officially entered the toponymy of the town by the dedication of a small square. In fact, a wide stretch from which you can see the Old Fortress has been dedicated to him ,a square between the Old Wet Dock and the Docker’s Building. A small square which certainly represents a symbolic place : just there he worked with his two-masted sailing boats, and just where it was the maritime beating heart of the town. Typically of Leghorn, small in dimensions but giant in cleverness, aspirations and dreams. And so was Tito Neri, who, as a young man whose family came from Liguria region (Sestri Levante) in the 17th Century, he began his working life by repairing the baskets for the unloading of coal before beginning his activity with tugs: towage and salvage, activity which is still being carried on by his descendant.
Not only the members of the Neri family joined the brief ceremony of the unveiling of the dedication plaque but also the Mayor Dr. Alessandro Cosimi , the spokeman for the Arts of the Council, and all the most important exponents of the harbor and local economy.
The Mayor of Livorno, in particular, underlined the fact that a town without memory of its past cannot have a future. For this reason we have decided to remember Tito Neri who has been so important for the town of Leghorn in his work and care of a whole life.
